The Danger of Abrasive Wear

Street cutting is fundamentally different than cutting a clean concrete slab. Asphalt and the underlying aggregate base create a highly abrasive, sandy slurry when cut. This slurry attacks the steel core of the blade right where the diamond segment is welded onβ€”a phenomenon known as "undercutting."

If you use a standard blade, the core will wear paper-thin and the diamond segments will snap off and fly like shrapnel long before the diamonds are actually worn out. To combat this, utility contractors must use dedicated asphalt cutting blades featuring drop segments (undercut protection). These deep-slotted segments act as plows, clearing the abrasive slurry away from the core and ensuring you get 100% life out of the blade.

Bond Hardness Matters

Because asphalt is abrasive, it constantly exposes new diamonds. If the metal matrix (the bond) holding the diamonds is too soft, the blade will melt away rapidly. Municipal contractors require blades with extremely hard bonds. This holds the diamonds in place longer, allowing them to do the cutting work. Conversely, if you hit a section of hard-cured concrete road, you need a softer bond. For mixed-bag roads (asphalt over concrete), combo blades with medium-hard bonds are the safest bet to keep production moving.

When a water main blows at 2:00 AM, the emergency response crew doesn't have time to carefully evaluate the pavement structure. They need a saw that will cut through whatever is in the wayβ€”asphalt, concrete, rebar, ductile iron pipe, and tree roots.
