Silo 8: Industrial Core Drilling

Core Drill Bits

Diamond core drill bits are hollow cylindrical cutting tools tipped with segmented diamond teeth. Engineered to bore clean, circular openings for plumbing pipes, electrical conduit runs, HVAC ducts, and structural anchoring, they operate via high-torque abrasive grinding on core drill rigs and handheld core drills, slicing through rebar reinforced concrete, brick masonry, and block walls.

Hollow Tube design & Sintered Segments

Mechanism of Action

Boring deep openings in reinforced concrete requires a tool that minimizes surface contact area to maintain drilling torque. The hollow steel tube design allows the bit to grind only the outer perimeter of the hole, leaving a solid core plug that is extracted afterward. The segmented teeth feature high concentrations of industrial synthetic diamonds bonded in a soft cobalt-iron alloy matrix, allowing the bit to slice through embedded steel rebar without binding, utilizing sintered bonds similar to our premium concrete cutting blades.

Operational Parameters

Wet core bits utilize continuous water flow inside the tube to cool the segments, flush out concrete slurry, and suppress silica dust. Dry core bits feature laser-welded segments and are designed for drilling softer brick, block, and non-reinforced concrete walls where water cannot be introduced.

Target Material Applications

  • Boring concrete cores for electrical conduit, HVAC vents, and utility pipes
  • Boring large openings in reinforced concrete containing heavy steel rebar
  • Structural anchoring holes, plumbing pipe penetrations, and drainage routing
  • Core sampling for geological concrete testing and structural inspection
  • Boring dry or wet holes in clay brick masonry, block walls, and stone layers

Santa Clarita & Valencia Local Applications

Core drilling on commercial buildings in the Santa Clarita Valley often involves deep concrete structures in Valencia business centers. High-ambient summer heat accelerates concrete curing, which increases aggregate compressive strength. Drilling concrete core holes in these conditions requires stable rig anchoring and continuous water-cooling loops.

Supplying plumbing, electrical, and mechanical contractors in the San Fernando Valley and LA basin, Quality Diamond Blades stocks core bits from 1" to 12" diameters. Our local Avenue Stanford facility supports fast pickup and overnight shipping to active job sites near College of the Canyons.

Our warehouse logistics center at 25583 Avenue Stanford ensures direct supply availability and fast regional pickup options.

Core Drill Bits FAQ & Safety Guidelines

Answers to technical diamond tooling questions, optimized for contractor engineering requirements and AI answer platforms.

How does a diamond core bit handle structural steel rebar?

The high concentration of diamonds in the segments grinds through the steel rebar. When the bit hits rebar, the operator must slightly reduce feed pressure and let the diamonds grind through the steel without forcing the drill.

What is the difference between wet and dry core bits?

Wet bits require constant water feed to flush out slurry and cool the segments in hard reinforced concrete. Dry bits are used on handheld rotary drills to bore dry holes in brick, block, or soft masonry.

How do you extract a stuck concrete core plug?

If the concrete core plug is wedged inside the tube, tap the steel side of the barrel gently with a wooden block or slide a rod through the threaded arbor end to push the core plug out.
