The Challenge of the Bumpy Surface

Exposed aggregate concrete is a staple of high-end residential driveways, pool decks, and commercial plazas across Southern California. It looks fantastic and provides excellent slip resistance. However, when you have to cut into a cured exposed aggregate slab—whether for a plumbing trench, a repair, or a late control joint—you are facing one of the most frustrating tasks in concrete cutting.

The problem is the surface topography. Unlike a troweled slab, the surface of exposed aggregate is comprised of thousands of rounded stones sitting proud of the cement matrix. When a diamond blade hits this surface, it doesn't slice smoothly; it bounces. That bouncing creates fierce vibration, and that vibration results in horrific, jagged chipping along the edge of the cut, ruining the decorative finish.

Why Standard Segmented Blades Destroy the Finish

If you use a standard, widely-spaced segmented blade on exposed aggregate, every time a gap between the segments passes over a proud stone, the next segment slams into it. This "hammer effect" shatters the stone and rips it out of the cement paste. You will end up with a cut edge that looks like it was chewed out by a jackhammer, which is unacceptable for decorative flatwork.

Solutions for a Clean Cut

To preserve the finish, you have to eliminate the bounce and ensure the stones are sliced, not shattered.

1. Blade Selection is Critical: You must abandon standard segmented blades. The best choice is a premium turbo rim blade or a tightly spaced segmented blade (sometimes called a narrow U-slot blade). The continuous or semi-continuous rim ensures the blade is always in contact with multiple stones simultaneously, preventing the hammer effect. Additionally, the bond must be relatively soft so the diamonds stay sharp and aggressively slice the hard river rock.

2. The Pre-Score Technique: For highly visible cuts (like a trench through a front walkway), do not attempt a full-depth cut on the first pass. Use a walk-behind saw locked at a very shallow depth (1/4 inch) to gently score the tops off the exposed stones. Once you have a flat, clean kerf established, you can drop the blade for the full depth cut. The kerf acts as a guide and prevents the blade from wandering or chipping the edges.

3. Massive Water Flooding: Water isn't just for cooling here; it acts as a dampener. Flooding the cut with cold water helps lubricate the diamonds as they hit the irregular stones, reducing the grabbing and bouncing that causes edge failure.

Dealing with Saw Walk

Because the surface is uneven, the blade will naturally want to follow the path of least resistance—deflecting off a hard stone into the softer cement paste. This causes "saw walk," where your straight line turns wavy. To combat this, use a blade with a heavy-duty, reinforced steel core that resists deflection. Do not force the feed rate. You have to walk the saw incredibly slowly, letting the high RPMs grind the stones flat before the blade advances.

Timing Control Joints

If you are pouring the slab, cut your control joints early. Cutting exposed aggregate in the "green" state (usually within 12-24 hours) is vastly easier.
