Building or renovating pools in Southern California is hard on equipment. Cutting the Shell: Gunite and Shotcrete
The shell of a pool is a uniquely challenging material. Because gunite and shotcrete are sprayed in place, they often have a very high sand-to-cement ratio, making them incredibly abrasive. If you throw a standard concrete blade (which typically has a medium-to-hard bond) onto your demo saw, the abrasive sand will chew through the bond matrix rapidly, causing the diamonds to fall out before they've done their work.
You need a blade with a hard bond. Hard bond blades hold onto the diamonds longer, allowing them to wear down naturally against the abrasive slurry. Core Drilling for Plumbing and Lights

When you get to the coping and waterline tile, the game changes from brute force to finesse. You are often dealing with expensive materials like travertine, flagstone, bullnose brick, or glass tile. A chipped edge here looks terrible and costs money to replace.
For these materials, drop the segmented blades and switch to a premium continuous rim or narrow j-slot blade. These blades provide a continuous cutting surface that grinds through the material rather than chopping it, resulting in a glass-smooth finish. Always run these wet to keep the stone cool and prevent heat-fracturing.
Renovation Plunge Cuts
Remodeling an existing pool often requires cutting out sections for new skimmers or modifying the bond beam. Plunge cutting into an old, fully-cured shell requires a blade that won't bind. Look for blades with side-protection or deep segments that clear the kerf efficiently, keeping the blade spinning freely even buried 5 inches deep.
