Every experienced road sawing contractor has seen it happen: a brand-new $200 asphalt blade is mounted on a walk-behind saw, cuts 300 linear feet of roadway, and suddenly loses two segmentsβeven though 80% of the segment height remains intact.

How Abrasive Slurry Destroys Unprotected Cores
Asphalt is composed of aggregate rock bound together by petroleum bitumen. Unlike cured concrete which produces a powdery cement slurry, asphalt sawing generates a thick, highly abrasive paste of sharp quartz sand grains.
As the blade spins, centrifugal force and vacuum pressure pull this abrasive slurry into the space directly beneath the segments. The diamond segment itself is hard enough to resist the abrasion, but the steel core beneath the laser weld is softer. Over time, the slurry grinds away the steel core like a sandblaster, leaving the diamond segment hanging by a thin metal thread until it violently shears off.
