  • Curved Geometry: Pool walls have tight radiuses. Trying to bend a flat 14-inch blade around a cove radius causes core dishing (the steel core permanently warps into a saucer shape).

The Fix: Run laser-welded concrete cutting diamond blades with soft cobalt matrices. Make short straight tangent plunge cuts rather than forcing the blade to curve inside the concrete.

2. Core Drilling Penetrations in Pool Walls

Plumbing new return lines, bubblers, deck jets, and LED lighting fixtures requires clean cylindrical penetrations through 8 to 12 inches of reinforced gunite:

  • 1.5" PVC Plumbing Lines: Core drill with a 2" or 2-1/2" diamond core bit. This provides a 1/2-inch perimeter ring for non-shrink waterproof hydraulic cement or expanding foam water stops.
  • Modern LED Nicheless Lights (Jandy / Hayward / Pentair): Modern 1.5-inch thread-in nicheless lights require a precision 1-1/2" diamond core bit bored through the gunite wall into the plumbing conduit.
  • Deep Waterline Jet Penetrations: Run industrial core drill bits with standard 14" barrel depths on handheld or rig-mounted core drill motors with continuous water feed.

3. Travertine, Flagstone & Bullnose Coping Cuts

Coping stone installation is the visual focal point of the swimming pool. Chipped edges on travertine, bluestone, or poured cantilever coping look amateur and trigger homeowner punch-list complaints:

  • Thin Continuous Rim Blades: Use a 4.5", 7", or 10" tile cutting diamond blade with a .050" to .060" ultra-thin kerf. Continuous rims eliminate segment impact chatter on fragile natural stone.
  • Angle Grinder Dry Cuts: When cutting coping in place along the pool edge, use a variable-speed grinder with a vacuum-brazed or continuous rim blade. Score the top surface 1/8-inch deep first, then complete the full-depth cut to eliminate surface blowout.

4. Waterline Tile & Glass Mosaic Installation

Glass pool tile is notoriously brittle and prone to thermal shock fractures:

  • High Diamond Grit: Never use a standard segmented masonry blade on glass tile. Use a fine-mesh (80/100 grit) wet continuous rim blade.
  • Flood with Water: Wet cutting is mandatory for glass mosaics. Keep the water tray clean; slurry buildup in the tray will scratch polished glass surfaces.
