Why Sharp Diamond Blades Suddenly Stop Cutting

You are on a concrete cutting job, halfway through slicing an 8-inch warehouse slab, when your saw suddenly slows down, the engine groans, and orange sparks begin showering from the blade guard. The blade has plenty of segment height left, but it feels like it is pushing against solid steel.

Your blade has glazed over. Fortunately, you don’t need to replace the bladeβ€”you just need to dress it.

The Science of Diamond Blade Glazing

A diamond blade does not cut like a toothed wood saw; it grinds. Millions of microscopic synthetic diamond crystals embedded in the metal segment scratch and pulverize aggregate into dust.

In ideal operation, the abrasive dust wears down the metal matrix at the exact same rate the diamonds wear down, constantly shedding dull diamonds to reveal fresh, sharp diamonds beneath. When cutting ultra-hard or non-abrasive aggregate (like quartz, granite river rock, or heavy rebar), the diamonds wear flat before the matrix can erode. The metal matrix smears over the dull diamonds, creating a smooth, glazed surface that generates friction rather than cuts.

Step-by-Step 60-Second Field Dressing Procedure

  1. Inspect the Segments: Turn off the saw and examine the segment rim. If it looks shiny and polished with no diamond grits protruding, it is glazed.
  2. Prepare the Dressing Medium: Use an official Silicon Carbide Dressing Stick, a soft silica refractory firebrick, or a block of high-sand asphalt.
  3. Set Saw to Standard Operating RPM: Start the saw and bring it to full operating speed.
  4. Execute 3 to 5 Shallow Plunge Cuts: Make shallow 1" to 2" deep passes into the dressing stick with minimal water feed. You will see light gray abrasive dust form immediately.
  5. Inspect Diamond Exposure: Turn off the saw and feel the segment (once cooled). It should now feel rough like 60-grit sandpaper, with sharp diamond facets protruding from the matrix.
