The Complexity of Pool Deck Restoration
Swimming pool deck repair is a massive industry in Southern California. Between aging 1980s pools, expansive clay soil causing heave, and earthquake settling, contractors are constantly tearing out and replacing pool decks and coping. However, working around a pool edge is high-stakes. One slip of a saw can destroy expensive waterline tile, and using the wrong blade will shatter expensive natural stone coping.
A pool contractor must have a diverse arsenal of diamond blades because you rarely encounter just one material on a deck.
Cutting Travertine and Soft Stone Coping
Travertine is incredibly popular for modern pool decks because it stays cool under the SoCal sun. However, it is a relatively soft, porous limestone. If you try to cut it with a standard segmented concrete blade, the heavy impacts of the segments will shatter the edges and blow out the corners of the paver.
For travertine, you must use a continuous rim diamond blade on a wet tile saw. The continuous rim provides constant contact with the stone, slicing it gently rather than hammering it. The bond should be medium-to-hard, as the soft travertine will rapidly wear away a soft-bond blade. Always cut travertine wet to achieve a factory-smooth edge that sits perfectly flush against the pool liner or tile.
Shaping Flagstone and Irregular Pavers
Many rustic pool designs use flagstone. Unlike travertine, flagstone isn't cut in straight lines; it is shaped to fit together like a puzzle. For this, massive walk-behind saws are useless.
The tool of choice is a 4.5-inch or 5-inch angle grinder equipped with a diamond turbo blade. The turbo rim allows for aggressive, fast cutting but with a smoother finish than a segmented blade. The small diameter allows the operator to make the curved, contoured cuts necessary to fit irregular stones tightly together around the skimmer boxes and radius corners.
Cantilever Concrete Coping Removal
Old pools often feature cantilevered concreteβwhere the concrete deck pours right over the edge of the pool, acting as the coping. Removing this without destroying the pool shell or the waterline tile underneath is nerve-wracking.
You cannot simply smash it with a sledgehammer. You must use a handheld power cutter with a 14-inch segmented concrete blade to make relief cuts. You plunge cut perpendicular to the pool edge, stopping about 1/2 inch above the tile line. Once the concrete is cross-hatched with these cuts, you can gently tap the blocks free with a chisel. A premium blade is required here because you need the cut to be incredibly fast and stable; any bouncing or wandering could send the blade into the pool wall.
Water and Slurry Management
The golden rule of cutting near a pool: Never let the slurry enter the water. Concrete slurry will instantly cloud the pool, ruin the chemical balance, and potentially destroy the filtration pump if sucked into the skimmer. Always cut wet to eliminate dust, but have a second man strictly dedicated to running a heavy-duty wet vac right at the back of the blade guard.
